I am on my annual sewing vacation! Every year I take off the week that The Sewing & Stichery Expo happens. The first half of the week, I am sewing like crazy so I can wear something new and fresh while there. This year is going to be a little different however. I am going to be helping out at StyleMaker Fabrics Booth! I am super excited to be among some terrific fabric and company. If you are planning to attend the expo, stop by and say hi…Michelle curates some terrific fabrics….not to mention her website is super helpful with choosing fabrics based on what you want to make :).
Pattern Description: (courtesy of http://www.helenscloset.ca) The Blackwood Cardigan is a cozy and versatile addition to your wardrobe. Designed with layering in mind, it has minimal excess fabric in the front and a close fit around the neck and shoulders. Its fitted shape and extra long sleeves make it perfect for wearing under jackets and vests, while also looking stylish over tank tops and dresses. View B ends at the hips, while View A extends down to the mid-thigh and includes patch pockets at hand level. The Blackwood is intended to be worn open and is not designed to close at the front.
I made version A in a size Medium.
Pattern Sizing: US XS thru XXL
Note: Helen fully explains the design in that it is a close-fitting cardigan with little ease and is NOT designed to close at center front. So choose your size accordingly.
ETA: for instance, I like the open design as it behaves more like a coordinate to the outfit.
Instructions: They were supremely written and well illustrated, although I didn’t need them, nor would an experienced sewer. One thing I found nice, is that Helen includes great tips for the beginner to sewing knits.
What I liked/disliked: The drafting was spot on, all notches and seams lined up perfectly. It was super easy and one can bang out several in a day…if one desired ;). There is nothing to dislike!
ETA: I really love how it fits. It is exactly as Helen has intended per her description.
Fabric Used: Midnight Espresso Brown Organic Cotton Wool Spandex Jersey from FabricMart. When I bought it I paid only $8/yard!! I had about 1 5/8 yds left over and eked out a medium, but it was tricky!
Pattern alterations or design changes made: None really, I knew I would remove about an inch in length as she drafted for a 5’6″ woman, so I cut on the small length cut line.
Conclusion: This cardigan in the long length is really on trend right now so is a must have in every woman’s wardrobe! One thing I will consider with my next version will be whether I want to have it a bit looser and loungey…if that is a word. One of the testers for Helen, made a color blocked long version and it is perfect for wearing with jeans. I want a slightly looser profile. Once I source the perfect french terry in white I am going to copy her.
That’s hilarious!! LOL!!! Photo-bombed by my Dog’s toy and a forgotten Christmas ornament. So much for my house keeping skills.
I know that all of us lurkers, prefer live model photos, but lets face it…I am on vacation. No shower yet and I am getting ready to have a marathon session at the salon to get my hair done. I promise that I will post a live picture or 2 here tonight or tomorrow morning :).
ETA: Live model shots are here!
