This weekend I’ve been on a lingerie sewing binge. Cloth Habit released 1003 Harriet bra and I was smitten. I’ve made so many Watsons, so I was sure to love the new underwire and you can see it here.. Madalynne x Simplicity 8228 has been in my lingerie notions drawer for quite a long time because I bought the PDF and had been dreading putting it together. After Harriet was finished and fitting well, I set out and suffered through cutting and taping about a third of the 8228 PDF before realizing each size was separate. Whew!, I quickly thumbed thru and found my size and had the pieces cut out.
Description: (from the website) Two soft cup bras (bralettes) and one panty. The halter bralette has a plunging neckline, scalloped lace edges and a double hook and eye closure at the back. It has channeling at the cup seam (but no underwires) which adds some support. The racerback bralette has a sweetheart neckline with scallop lace edges throughout. The panty is high-waisted with lace side panels.
Sizing: 32A to 42DD. Using the instructions put me in a DD cup and a much smaller band, which I did not use. I must be doing something wrong, but don’t know how…it’s not difficult to measure the parts. I decided to use my normal size of 34B and it worked well. For the panty, she has you pick your size by the waist which I found odd. But it worked out in a size M. However, I am not super hippy, so for those who have a curvy body….small waist in comparison to hips, I would flat pattern measure and grade/trace accordingly.
Did it Look Like the Envelope Photo?: yes!
Fabric and Notions: Bra: Gallon lace from Tailor Made, Power knit from Sew Sassy, picot elastic, clear elastic, hook n eye, and channeling from my stash. Panty: panty fabric and elastic from Sew Sassy. This fabric feels really nice, dare I say it’s like the expensive body shapers in RTW.
Design and/or Fit Adjustments: None.
I bought 2kits from Tailor Made a month ago, but decided to use some galloon lace and powereknit for the bra and panty knit I had in the stash to work out any fit problems. The instructions were really well done. They begin with some tips and then have you adhere the lace to the mesh using spray adhesive which I could not find. I must have used it all and forgot, so I used this glue stick I had and what a royal pain in the behind that was. I just cut out both layers separately and it went just fine. I used my serger for most of the construction using a 3 thread overlock with wooly nylon in the upper looper.
The fit was terrific for both bra and panty. Of note however, the guide for the leg elastic is too long, but easily remedied by measuring the opening and applying with a bit if tension will do you fine.
For my 2nd version, I made view B, the racer back. Again, I made no changes and the fit is terrific. It almost feels like a sports bra…very supportive. I didn’t have wide enough galloon lace for the matching high waisted panty, so I used my fave Watson Bikini to complete the look.
I’ve been having so much fun making lingerie. What about you, have you joined the bra making community? Do share…
